Title
Object #4: Belleville Breviary
Subject
Breviaries, liturgical books
Description
A breviary is a liturgical book which outlines religious services for each day, which would be recited in that order in Church proceedings. The Belleville Breviary is an illuminated breviary that was also produced in Paris during the same time periods as the featured French Psalterium and the Hours of Jeanne de Navarre. This breviary outlines prayers used in summer and winter, but is split into two volumes (Kren and Marx).
The presence of ivy in this manuscript is similar to that of psalters and a book of hours, since it accompanies religious text that is designed for practicing Christianity. The ivy leaves frame the layout of the breviary, and use a similar three pronged, delicate style.
