Title
Object #6: Horæ Beatæ Mariæ Virginis
Subject
Book of Hours, Border Illumination
Description
While this accompanying object does not use ivy to illuminate its edges, it does uses botanical imagery to fill the borders. This book of hours is formatted extremely similarly to the featured psalter, which is also a religious text. Both are used for religious perposes to guide prayer.
In the case of Horæ Beatæ Mariæ Virginis, botanical illuminations elevate the value of this leaf, compliment the characters of the text, and help create visual interest on the page. Similar to the way that ivy vines would encompass the sides of the page and creep into the borders, these botanical illuminations accompany the same space on the page as the ivy vines in the featured object (Meagher, "Botanical Imagery"). This similar placement across manuscripts helps give insight into border illumination on religious manuscripts.
